Research Well to Get the Correct Garage Door Hardware

Garage doors, once installed, require proper maintenance and care to give you long-lasting solutions. More often than not the manufacturers will leave you with a manual at the time of installation of the garage hardware. Study through the instructions that are related to the steps that you have to take in the event of an emergency. It is also essential to go through the general instructions regarding the maintenance of the garage-door hardware.

One thing you have to be careful is that never try your hand at repairing the garage door if you do not have the proper tools and more importantly, the required technical expediency. The metal parts of the door will need lubrication from time to time. The metallic hardware components such as hinges may wear over time thus necessitating the need for lubrication.

The hardware has to be given thorough examination at least on a monthly basis for any indication of wear. The springs, rollers, pulleys and cables are some of the parts that will require this type of examination. While handling wires and springs, adequate care has to be taken as they are mostly under high tension. It is better to hire professional assistance in case you find the need for replacement of any of the above mentioned parts.

It is equally important to give a check of the balance of the door. This has to be done regularly at least once or a couple of times in a year. The installation of electric opener to the garage will require careful attention. Professional help can be sought in this case too. While conducting any operations in repair, caution has to be taken that you keep your hands off all the moving parts. In case you use electric opener, keep the remote controller out of the reach of children since there is a considerable amount of force involved in the operation. It is best to go for a model of electric opener which can automatically detect any obstacles.

The garage door will need a thorough wash using mild detergents at least four times a year. This will check the building up of any corrosive substances on your garage hardware.

Make the Barn Door Hardware Combo Part of Your Next New Home!

“Close that door! Were you born in a barn?” Have you heard this said to you when you were growing up? Kids tend not to close the doors when going in or out and adults are constantly saying this phrase to their kids. The barn has always been thought of as a place for animals to sleep-not humans. However, this concept is changing as the trend is going towards barn inspired homes and other buildings, like restaurants and hotels. A barn shaped home can look classy with the right hardware and doors, as well as the other accessories. You can find great barn doors and hardware from any reputable company, but especially from us. Here are some examples of what you can find when you shop with us.

New Door Hardware Adds Excellent Decorative Touches

When it comes to home design, homeowners are always looking for interesting ways to incorporate detail into their home. Whether your house is large or small, details should always compliment the existing elements in the home. Home design typically focuses on one or two major items in the room. In the living room: couches or entertainment centers, in the kitchen: cabinets, counters, or appliances, in the bathroom: the vanity or the shower. These are pieces that can be found in just about every home and are absolutely vital to the room in order to be fully functional. Regardless of how beautiful or new these large elements are, they will be compromised if the smaller decorative pieces in the room do not compliment them perfectly. Although many overlook it, door hardware makes a big impact on the room’s design theme. Before guests enter a room or open a cabinet, they must first see and feel the door hardware.

When it comes to home remodeling, many simply concentrate on replacing the large items in the room and then ending the job there. Whether you’re undergoing serious house renovations or just updating the look of your home, decorative touches play an important role in completing the design. Although they’re small touches, decorative hardware makes your already great pieces even better. By adding a touch of color, detail, or texture – homeowners can maximize a room’s design potential.

In a room like the kitchen, cabinets are hanging directly at eye level. Even if you have brand new, beautiful cabinets – the wrong door hardware can make them an eyesore. Replacing regular, bland door hardware with decorative hardware, you’ve created a new decorative element within the room and improved the look of your cabinets. Decorative hardware won’t just benefit the doors you install them on, but they will impact the room as a whole.

Combining function and design makes incorporating decorative hardware into small rooms a breeze. In rooms like the bathroom, homeowners are very limited as to what they can put into the room without cramming the space. It’s important to add a decorative touch into the room, but at the same time – we don’t want to compromise the available space. With door hardware, you’re taking something that is vital to the room itself and putting a decorative twist on it. Without taking up counter, wall, or floor space, you’ve added a decorative detail in the room.

Another solution that decorative hardware provides is that homeowners who are bored with the look of their room can instantly make improvements without having to endure a home remodeling project. Home remodeling doesn’t just come with the installation of new pieces. Most of the time, plumbing and electrical routes must also be altered – making the process long and costly. Sometimes all a room needs is a few decorative adjustments, and the entire look and feel is altered. Home design doesn’t just focus on the large elements like many people think. Without small elements, like door hardware, to work in harmony with the centerpieces, a room can feel boring. So before you decide to undergo some major house renovations, sit down and decide what is really bothering you about the room. If you want to update your design, make some small adjustments first. New door hardware might seem like a very small adjustment, but the impact this small change can make is big. Details in a room ultimately give the room its class, character, and design. Without the right attention, these can get lost in the shuffle. By ensuring that no detail goes overlooked, your home’s design can reach it’s full potential.

Home Improvement Ideas – Trendy Door Hardware

When looking for new home improvement ideas, many homeowners revert back to the classic ideas. In order to see the carefully planned design of your room, a visitor must first see the door that hides it. Considering the addition of new door hardware can give your rooms a new and updated look. Not only will the installation of new door hardware pull together the look and feel of your room itself, by coordinating small details like these, you’ll be giving your entire home a coordinated vibe.

Whether you are interested in achieving that trendy look within your home, or you’re just looking to add a little extra detail to your doors – new door hardware can make the impact that you desire.

Another great option is replacing current, round door handles with door levers. Not only do these give off a more modern and more sophisticated feel, they could be the small detail your room needs to give it that updated and pulled together look. Even if you’re not a home improvement expert, home renovation doesn’t have to come strictly with large, time consuming projects. Installing new door hardware could be the perfect option for you if you’re interested in testing the waters of home renovation. With the requirement of very few tools and little to no clean up time, installing new door handles or door levers gives you the opportunity to make a change to your home without having to call upon costly outside labor.

If you considering replacing your doors altogether, settling for boring door hardware is like getting a brand new dining room table, and then covering it in an old, unsightly tablecloth. By complimenting new pieces within your home by focusing in on their details, you’ll be able to accomplish and pulled together, trendy look within your home. By installing new door handles on your new door, you’ll be making an already great piece even greater.

Regardless of whether you’re considering redoing an entire room, or just looking for interesting new home improvement ideas to implement into your space, door hardware is the perfect finishing touch on any project. As previously mentioned, the door is the ultimate first impression on any space. Even if your room is beautifully designed, if your door hardware isn’t on point – your amazing décor could be hindered by this small detail. By taking doors into consideration when updating the look of your home, you can be sure that you will achieve a finished and pulled together look worth showing off.

Why Do They Call it “Barn Door Hardware?”

Barn door hardware is a unique and appealing new style of interior hardware for doors. But some have asked, “why is it called barn door hardware?” Upon first hearing the name, some may doubt its home interior applications.

As it turns out, this unique style of hardware is named for its original application. On large barns where particularly large doors were used, sometimes a sliding track system was used instead of a swinging hinge system for the doors.

With a hinge system, the size, weight, and overall mass of a door are born by just the hinges. That puts a lot of stress on small areas. Additionally, the vertical arrangement of the hinges causes an unequal amount of stress to be placed on the different hinges. This can over time cause the hinges to warp, bend, and even break if not properly treated. Also when a door is on hinges, it must swing out over a large area to move into the open position. This can sometimes be inconvenient and tedious, especially if you’re trying to conserve on space.

Flat track sliding door systems were developed as a solution to some of the problems larger barn doors were having. The door is affixed with two track hangers at opposite ends that hang on and roll along a large piece of track above the doorway. It’s sometimes referred to as “flat track hardware” because the track itself is made of solid steel flat bar. This gave the track strength and rigidity. Now instead of a vertical hinge system, large doors had a horizontal track system that supported them. The horizontal design allowed for the weight of the door to be spread out more evenly across the entire system, giving it more strength. It also allowed for the large doors to slide back and forth into position instead of having to swing out.

More strength, more space, more overall ease of operation- that was why this style of hardware was developed and used. And that is where the name “barn door hardware” comes from.

How Anti-Ligature Locks Can Prevent Harm by Being the Best Institution Detention Hardware Solution

When purchasing commercial door hardware for psychiatric institutions, detention centers, and other buildings where the life safety of the detainee is the primary concern, anti-ligature locks are a must. Anti-ligature locks can be effective and safe, preventing people from using the lock to inflict harm on themselves. These locks are an essential piece of institution and detention center hardware.

What is Anti-Ligature?

The word ligature refers to something that is used for tying or binding, such as a shoe lace or cord. When it comes to institutional door hardware and other places where the risk for self-injury is high, you need a door lock with the least ligature points as possible, preventing the detainee from being able to tie something to the lock and harm him or herself using the hardware. These locks are a strong preventative measure from the most common type of suicide with ligature; asphyxiation. Standard door locks typically have notches or protrusions that allow somebody to attach cords or lines to the lockset, thus causing potential self-injury. Anti-ligature locks are the most effective way to prevent this and other potentially fatal actions.

Anti-ligature Lock Safety and Design

When it comes to institutional or detention center hardware, the safety of both the staff and the detainee are very important. Anti-ligature locks are carefully crafted to reduce and substantially eliminate any ligature points that might result in self-harm or worse, fatality. The knob and lever both have a cone shape or tapered type handle which is easy to grip, but very difficult to try and attach any laces, lines, or cords. The handle is also recessed into the rose, which further reduces ligature points. These locks are designed to withstand high abuse by typically having a stainless steel construction, minimal internal parts, and locking mechanisms to prevent the handle from being removed and used as a weapon. Some locks even have a blocking plate to protect in cases where the handle might be removed and the internal components used as ligature points or otherwise. When it comes to institutional facility doors and life safety, these locks are a great way to accomplish the safety and security necessary.

Anti-Ligature Lock Types

Anti-ligature door locks are typically grade 1, heavy-duty, available in two main application types; cylindrical and mortise with two handle styles; lever and knob. There are a multitude of functions to select from, such as, passage, bathroom, privacy, office, storeroom, and classroom, but many others are also available. The cylinder types most commonly available are Schlage standard keyed cylinders or Interchangeable core/cylinders to accept an interchangeable core. However, other keyways can be sometimes be matched if necessary. Anti-ligature locks are growing in popularity and quickly becoming the standard in psychiatric and detention settings. You can now find these ligature resistant locks readily available from manufacturers such as, Marks, Townsteel, Sargent, Corbin Russwin, Stanley-Best, Schlage and others.

Code Considerations For Various Types of Door Hardware

Most consumers never think twice when buying various types of door hardware but behind the scene, maintenance managers are responsible for ensuring that hardware manufactured and sold meet code standards. Typically, the manager would be involved with door hardware designed for commercial use although hardware used in apartments, condominiums, and other shared residential properties, as well as single-family dwellings is a part of this persons responsibility.

Whether door locks and handles are being purchased for a home or business, everything sold in the United States must meet strict guidelines for functionality. However, the exact codes vary somewhat between different states and municipalities. This means that codes established on a local, state, and federal level would be unique. As a part of this job, maintenance managers have a tough job in staying current on codes and industry standards but taking this job serious is what keeps people protected.

Because of growing concern in safety, applicable codes have become relatively complex. Of course, the top issues that door hardware codes address include safety, security, and accessibility. If the hardware manufactured for security purposes was sold without meeting mandated code standards, in addition to putting people in potential harms way, business and home intrusion due to faulty or inadequate locks cause insurance costs to skyrocket.

Keep in mind that along with standards and codes on a national level, managers must stay current on standards and codes as they relate to the National Fire Protection Agency, and the American National Standards Institute/International Code Council. However, another organization oversees standards and codes for various types of door hardware to include the American with Disabilities Acts. In this last case, people with certain disabilities need solutions for door knobs, handles, pulls, locks, etc so they can get in and out of doors the same as everyone else.

We wanted to provide a few of the standards and codes under the different organizations, and a brief comment about what those are.

• American National Standard for Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities (ANSI and ICC) – These door hardware standards and codes are specific to the state of Louisiana stating that codes must coordinate with rebuilding efforts after damage caused by hurricane.

• National Fire Protection (NFPA) – In this case, the organization is responsible for 80 standards and codes relating to fire doors and fire windows. Primarily, the organization makes sure that escape is possible during an emergency while keeping the property protected.

• Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) – For people living and working in certain parts of the country, high force hurricane winds are common. In this case, codes would apply not just for door hardware but materials of which doors could be made to withstand winds between 130 and 150 miles per hour.

• Access Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities (ADAAG) – The last organization we wanted to mention is this, which establishes and enforces guidelines specific to threshold height and door clearance limits, along with accessible door hardware to include pulls, knobs, handles, latches, locks, and other functioning mechanisms that would be shaped making them easy to grasp and operate with one hand.
